One of the key hormones for female health is progesterone.
As females age -- progesterone falls. The decline in progesterone is even more of a concern in menopause as it seems to really cause symptoms when it is deficient.
Progesterone is the one female hormone which starts to decline after the age of 35 in most women. This hormone deficiency can result in several symptoms. They are -- sleep alteration and/ or insomnia, anxiety and nervousness, palpitations and mood alterations. An uncommon but annoying problem for some women is a crawling sensation under the skin.
Progesterone has a natural calming effect for the brain and generally improves sleep and decreases anxiety. It also has a mild mood elevating effect and helps to lessen depression. Estrogen and progesterone need to be in the proper balance. Often women with hormone imbalance just need additional progesterone to alleviate the menopausal symptoms they experience.
Other less known benefits of replacing progesterone are that it strongly supports adrenal gland function and immunity as well as supporting the cardiovascular system. Additionally progesterone builds bone and has anti - breast cancer effects.
We replace deficient levels of progesterone with the bio- identical form as opposed to the synthetic forms (called progestins) often seen in birth control pills.
