Growth hormone levels decrease naturally as we
grow older. In fact, human growth hormone levels
in individuals 60 or older are only about half
of that in young adults.
Reduced levels of growth hormone
associated with aging contribute to age-related
decreases in muscle mass, strength, and
lipolysis. |
Below are some of the effects of Human
Growth Hormone decline:
|
Body fat increases by 7% - 25%
while lean body mass decreases similarly. Muscle
strength and muscle mass are noticeably reduced
while long bone density and spinal bone density
decrease.
Weight gain of 30-50
pounds can occur.
Furthermore, there are negative effects on
cholesterol; triglyceride levels increase while
high density cholesterol (HDL), 'good
cholesterol', decreases.
The risk of cardiovascular
disease increases due to vascular wall
thickening and changes associated with decreased
cardiac output.
Less energy, anxiety, social
isolation, depression and lack of concentration. |

Are there
Side Effects of Human Growth Hormone Therapy?
|
| Because
growth hormone is naturally
produced in your body, there are
relatively few side effects
related to Human Growth Hormone
Therapy
replacement. Documented side
effects include fluid retention,
joint pain, insulin resistance,
and some joint swelling. All of
these side effects are results
of overdosing, but relatively
simple to reverse. They should
be caught immediately by the
overseeing physician. In the
event of any of these side
effects, the patient should take
a one week break from the
program and then restart with a
lower dosage. |
How Much/ What Frequency of Human
Growth Hormone Therapy?
|
| |
|
Dosing and frequency of Human
Growth Hormone Therapy is
determined after the diagnosis of Adult Growth
Hormone Deficiency is made. This diagnosis
is established by coupling the patient’s
symptoms with appropriate lab testing. Human
Growth Hormone Therapy is
generally dosed by a specific measure known as
an International Unit or IU. The
manufacturer of Growth Hormone supplies the
medication in milligrams. There are 3
international units in every 1 mg of the
medication. As an example, one vial of 6
mg contains 18 units. Various strengths of
Growth Hormone are manufactured and can be
supplied to patients. The actual Growth
Hormone comes as a lypholized powder in a
sterile vial. In order to use the growth hormone
it must be mixed (reconstituted) with
bacteriostatic water. The dilution and
actual mixing is determined by the prescribing
physician. Once mixed the Growth Hormone
is now in a solution and it should be stored in
the patient’s refrigerator. The
actual dose of Growth Hormone is determined by
several factors, but as a general rule the dose
is between 0.5 to 1 IU to start. Doses are adjusted upward over time after
appropriate lab testing is performed to measure
special markers for Growth hormone replacement.
The most sensitive indicator for Human
Growth Hormone Therapy replacement is IGF-1. In
other words, IGF-1 is used to gauge the progress
and levels of the Human Growth Hormone Therapy
dosage. Seven to eight weeks after starting
Human Growth Hormone Therapy or after changing a
dose of Human Growth Hormone Therapy the IGF-1
can be drawn. Other general rules apply to dosing Human
Growth Hormone Therapy. Men with larger frames and larger bodies
generally require higher dosing.
Women need more growth hormone than men.
Most patients can increase their IGF-1 by
up to 100 after 7-8 weeks of daily injections of
1 IU. An
optimal IGF-1 range for men seeking replacement
therapy is 290-360 and for women it is 260-290. These optimal ranges are the high normal
range for a healthy young adult in their 20’s.
The frequency of dosing depends a lot on each
particular patient’s preference.
Generally the majority of men and women
who are committed to Human Growth Hormone
Therapy replacement dose themselves daily.
Minimum effective dosing should not be
less than 5 days per week.
So for convenience sake, often patients
will take Human Growth Hormone Therapy daily on
a Monday through Friday schedule or a Monday
through Saturday schedule with 1-2 days off
weekly. Also important in
administration of Human Growth Hormone Therapy
is when it should be given. Most authorities agree that Human Growth
Hormone Therapy is best given first thing in the
morning soon after arising.
It should be given at least 1 hour before
any food as well. The dose and
frequency of Human Growth Hormone Therapy self
administration is important. If done correctly and with adequate
physician supervision replacing Human Growth
Hormone Therapy will greatly improve a patient’s
quality of life. |
